Terry finishes strong at 7-on-7
Fort Bend Roundup: Terry finishes strong at 7-on-7 tourneyby JASON MCDANIEL , CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT | July 19, 2011 5:35 pm
En route to the consolation championship, the Terry Rangers started slow at the Division I state 7-on-7 tournament last weekend, and with good reason. Their top two playmakers were late arrivals.
"Me and Derrick (Griffin) didn't get there until bracket play," incoming junior Eugene Wright said.
"We were supposed to make it for pool play but our flight got delayed from Minnesota, because there was bad weather up there, but we got up there that morning for bracket play and went all the way."
Griffin and Wright were in Minnesota for the Best Buy Invitational, an AAU basketball tournament, and just when they were ready to head home and over to Texas A&M, it started raining.
They didn't end up making it to College Station until 1 a.m. last Saturday.
"I was mad because I knew something like that was going to happen," Wright said.
Without the pair, the Rangers went just 1-2 in Pool P, with losses to Lake Dallas (26-20) and Klein Collins (39-26) and a close 24-16 victory over Rio Grande Valley Class 5A team Edinburg.
That left them as the No. 3 seed from the pool, sending them to the consolation bracket.
When Wright saw the draw he was confident his Rangers would rebound, and that he and Griffin could quickly shake off any weariness or jet lag from the latest portion of their busy summer.
"We figured we'd be ready because we're used to it," Wright said. "We do so much that we don't get worn out anymore."
The Rangers wore out Tomball in the first round of bracket play, winning 52-46 to start the day with a huge jolt of confidence. The Cougars are expected to be one of the top 5A teams in the area this year.
And it was Wright providing the game-winning score.
"It was crazy," he said. "I saw the zone they were playing, and they had a safety who was slow so I knew I could get behind him, and I just stepped behind him and Antoine (Arboleda) threw the ball and that was all she wrote."
From there, the Rangers went on to beat Wichita (33-20), Weslaco (32-21) and Tyler John Tyler (34-13) to make the consolation final, where they took on Abilene Cooper and prevailed 46-26.
"Our defense came up with some real big stops against a good offense," Wright said. "They did pretty well the whole tournament. And then, in (that) game, they couldn't stop Derrick. He had three touchdowns.
"He was just too big for them."
Wright supplied the first score against Cooper on a bomb down the middle of the field, helping spark the big win.
"It was exciting because we worked so hard in all the tournaments we played in and lost before that, and then getting upping there and doing that felt really good," Wright said.
Now, coming off two wins over big-time programs to close the 7-on-7 season, the Rangers are ready for a big 2011 season in 11-man football. Those grueling two-a-day practices can't come soon enough.
"It got everybody excited so everybody's pumped to play now," Wright said.

Rangers win State 7 on 7 Consolation Championship!!!!
Rangers Going to State!!!
Fort Bend Roundup: Terry eyes state title bid by JASON MCDANIEL , CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT | July 11, 2011 4:31 pm
The Terry Rangers will spend the weekend in College Station after qualifying for the state 7-on-7 tournament for the first time in four years.
The Division I tournament opens with pool play Friday, July 15, and concludes with championship and consolation play Saturday, July 16, at Texas A&M.
"We're very excited," said incoming junior Eugene Wright, who will receive, run the ball and return kicks this fall. "We worked hard to get there. It took us till the last (SQT) but that's alright, we came with it."
The Rangers will be up against some of the top programs in the state at College Station, and even though the results aren't necessarily a predictor of 11-man success, they're going there to win.
"We take it seriously because it actually helps us during the regular season," Wright said. "It helps our quarterback get to know his receivers and how we run our routes, all that kind of stuff, and our defense gets to connect and get their coverage together."
Wright spent last weekend playing AAU basketball at the Under Armour Great American Shootout in the Dallas area, then planned to head to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Best Buy Invitational.
He was scheduled to return home just in time to make the trip to A&M, along with standout receiver Derrick Griffin, who plays on the same Houston Defenders Select team.
And even on the AAU basketball circuit, the state 7-on-7 tournament was on everyone's mind.
"It will be good," Wright said. "I know there will be a lot of competition, based on what I've seen from the tournaments that we played in, and up here in Dallas a lot of people are talking about it."
Griffin was the difference-maker for Terry at the Cinco Ranch state qualifying tournament, where they earned their spot at state, and Wright says he expects Griffin and the entire team to be in College Station.
That automatically makes the Rangers serious contenders to win it all.
"He has a big impact because the defenses have to worry about him a lot," Wright said. "If you throw a jump ball, ain't nobody stopping him, unless they get a pass interference. And they're keying on him so it opens up things a lot."
Griffin (6-foot-8), playing in his first state qualifying tournament, had four receiving touchdowns and drew several pass interference calls in the Rangers' 64-58 win over Katy in the Cinco Ranch championship game.
He also helped them rout the Dulles Vikings 46-18 in the semifinals, which clinched their state berth.
The win over Katy, a traditional powerhouse with six state championships, was particularly big for a team that's looking to make waves in Class 4A this season, giving them a big boost of confidence.
"It was real big," Wright said. "It was a tough game, too. We went into three overtimes. It was tough, but they couldn't stop Derrick."

Terry grad Caleb Williams lights it up both on and off the field as he transitions to Rice University
Terry grad Caleb Williams lights it up both on and off the field as he transitions to Rice University
By Mickie Blackmon of VYPE MAGAZINE - West Houston
Normally, an offensive lineman doesn't get a whole lot of attention either in high school or college, but Caleb Williams of Terry is starting to turn a lot of heads as he prepares to make the move up the ladder to Rice University this fall.
It's not hard to understand why. The 6-3, 275-pounder is a specimen both athletically and academically and Owls coach David Bailiff thinks that after a red-shirt season, Williams will become a big anchor on the o-line over his four years at the school.
"We think that he is a perfect fit at Rice, scholastically, athletically. He's Mr. Everything at his high school," Bailiff said. "His upside is tremendous. He's a very young senior and he's a totally-packaged young men. That's what we're looking for at Rice. He's even a volunteer at the fire department. You look at what all he has accomplished and the accolades he has received, it's just amazing what he has already done. He's just turned 17. He just represents everything we want on this football team and this university. I can't wait for him to get here."
Williams played in last Saturday's Bayou Bowl game and page 60 of the program almost didn't have room for all the highlights of his time at Terry under head coach Tim Teykl.
"I guess I just want to be great because you see a lot of people who don't make it and that kind of pushes you to really want to be the one who accomplishes something," Williams said.
Teykl, who has been head coach at Terry since 1992, thinks one of the biggest factors in Williams' development has been his mother, Patricia Newell, who raised Williams as a single parent.
"That he was raised by a single mom by herself, she's a real hero in my heart, too," Teykl said. "He's a real special kid and I think he's got a lot of upside. I don't think his mother gave him a reason to see any other way then to do it the way they've done it. She was very disciplined, very committed. She's a strong Christian. She's held her job and is very well thought of and well spoken about at the Richmond State School. She's not a pouter or a whiner. She's always there for him and all his events.
"He's had reason to be at a lot of events this year and sometimes I had to take or him or she would have to take him. She would bend over backwards to try to get out of whatever she had to get out of. That's rare in our population of the student body here at Terry, but because she's done that look at the rewards she's reaping."
Williams plans to major in either sports medicine or biology.
"He's extremely active and he doesn't do it second-rate. He's first class all the way around. I have to pinch myself sometimes wondering how come and why," Teykl said. " The thing that really impacted me on him was after football you run track starting in January. His schedule was so loaded, so compacted, he started coming in the mornings before school, 5:30 or 5:45. He got his workouts in. He quit what he needed to be doing for Terry for track and football. It was the Rice University workout, their workouts. It's grueling and he didn't miss a day. That is rare. That really shows you that he's not a 17 or 18-year old kid in his mind or soul."
